Carphone Warehouse is to be investigated by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), after the UK high street retailer revealed that they were the victim of a major hack.
The ICO, which is the UK’s official data watchdog, said that it looking into the breach, which has affected up to 2.4 million customers.
A spokesman for the ICO told the BBC: “We have been made aware of an incident at Carphone Warehouse and are making enquiries.”
It is believed that names, addresses, dates of birth and bank details may have been accessed during what the retailer described as a “sophisticated cyberattack”.
It further revealed encrypted credit card data belonging to up to 90,000 customers may also have been accessed.
Carphone Warehouse has already launched its own investigation into how hackers were able to gain access to its IT systems at a UK-based division.
This specific division is responsible for operating the websites for OneStopPhoneShop.com, e2save.com and Mobiles.co.uk. It also delivers a number of services to iD Mobile, TalkTalk Mobile and Talk Mobile.
Sebastian James, group chief executive of Dixons Carphone – which owns the high street retailer – said in an official announcement: “We take the security of customer data extremely seriously, and we are very sorry that people have been affected by this attack on our systems.
“We are, of course, informing anyone that may have been affected, and have put in place additional security measures.”
Carphone Warehouse is currently contacting all customers affected by the incident. In the meantime, concerned individuals are advised to change their online passwords, monitor account activity and notify their bank or credit card provider.
