The slip was uncovered when a sample set from thousands of documents published under Freedom of Information (FOI) requests was examined, including one that revealed technical information about the Navy’s nuclear submarines and what could cause a “catastrophic” meltdown in the on-board nuclear reactors.
Secret information from at least three separate government departments is available on the internet because of incompetent handling of sensitive material by Whitehall officials, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.
Top-secret US lab infiltrated by spear phishers – again
One of the most sensitive science labs in the US has shut down all internet access after attackers exploited a vulnerability in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser to steal data from some of its servers. The security breach at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is at least the second time since 2007 that computers have been hacked when employees were duped by phishing emails. The most recent compromise was initiated by messages that were manipulated so that they appeared to come from the lab’s Human Resource Department, The Knoxville News Sentinel reported.
Blistering attack on UK ICO strategy
ViaSat has analysed more than 2,500 data breaches reported to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and concluded that the ICO needs penalise organisations more for data breaches.
