Why is it always the wicked who live into ripe old age? The computer virus, that scourge of the securely unvigilant, has just turned 40.

It is all over the news, but just in case you missed it… Two score years ago, the Creeper virus was released into the wild. Created by Bob Thomas in 1971, it used the precursor of the internet, to spread between DEC PDP 10 systems on the Tenex operating system. Check out the full story at SC Magazine or at PhysOrg.com.

More unflattering imitation

Last October, our colleague Tasneem Patanwala blogged about rogue antivirus masquerading as an ESET product. In that instance it was a product calling itself Smart Security, and Tasneem’s blog includes lots of useful information about that particular malware, and fake AV in general. Now a program calling itself E-Set Antivirus 2011 seems to have appeared.

Smart Phone, Bad App

As the number of apps for smartphones continues to grow, perhaps your paranoia about such apps should be growing as well. In an unusual statement, the former director of the CIA has warned that the government isn’t sharing enough information about cyber security. ICO says 40% of wireless home internet users have no knowledge of WiFi security

Research just published by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) claims to show that 40% of people who have WiFi at home do not understand how to change the security settings on their networks. Read more in Infosecurity Magazine.
