British Prime Minister spamming Irish mailboxes?

Spam email pretending to come from David Cameron phishing for people’s personal info.

David Cameron

We have to admit, we found the latest spam to hit Irish mailboxes rather comical. Apparently Great Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron is mailing individuals in Ireland to tell them the British Government owes them an overdue inheritance of £2.5 million. All one has to do to claim the fortune is email the Commonwealth Affairs Secretary of State William Hague with all their personal details and wait for the fairy dust to be sprinkled on them.

Well, the spammers did overlook that the ATM withdrawal in Ireland is usually limited to €600, so the £5000 daily withdrawal makes very little sense, while the phrase “Intelligent Monitoring Unit” does come up often in relation to various Nigerian scams. ESET Ireland has a more detailed story on scamming available in our blog.

In any case, Irish computer users are advised to ignore any such phishing emails, and rather rely on the lottery or the races for their millions. The chances of winning are much greater and the damages much less severe. Of course, if you still want to check with David Cameron in person when you’ll receive your 2.5 million, the correct address is: http://www.number10.gov.uk/footer/contact-us

It seems incredible that there are such gullible clowns out there who would respond to such a facile request, but obviously the scammers are confident enough and will no doubt be able to net a few suckers.

    • Urban Schrott says:

It’s a numbers game really. Send out enough spam and it adds up. Oh, and some spammers make money just by sending it, even if noone replies.
